Electric car market 'on verge of triumph'

03 December 2008

The electric car market is "on the verge of triumphant maturity" according to London mayor Boris Johnson.

Following a session of filming for Top Gear the mayor, made his prediction in the Telegraph, claiming that the only thing missing to trigger the electric car explosion was the "encouragement of consumer demand".

To that end he pledged never to buy a petrol powered car again and told the electrical vehicle industry that he would be the first customer of an electric family car when it was produced.

He noted that with models such as the Tesla and others that rival top sportscars, the electrical vehicle is no longer a "glorified milk float".

The mayor added that like mobile phone technology, which has progressed from brick-like handsets to thin phones that can access the internet and take pictures, the electrical car market is set to progress rapidly.

According to the Committee for Climate Change's report Building a Low Carbon Economy, it will be necessary to drive cleaner lower emitting cars to meet carbon dioxide emissions reduction targets and combat climate change.
