Alternative transport

It seems almost too obvious to say it, but the best way to cut fuel use and CO2 emissions from driving is simple: drive less. But that's usually easier said than done.

This section provides some ideas for reducing the amount you drive and for making better use of other methods of transport, including car sharing.

We all know that cars cost the environment dear. Even with smarter driving and today's relatively efficient vehicles, driving requires lots of fuel and creates large quantities of CO2.

Whilst driving is sometimes the only practical option, a lot of trips are frequently unnecessary. For example, around half of all car journeys in the UK are for less than five miles, which are often the least efficient for a car - a cold engine uses almost twice as much fuel as one that has warmed up and some catalytic converters can take five miles to become effective. So for short journeys in particular, alternatives such as walking, cycling or public transport are more environmentally friendly.

But it's not just an environmental issue. Driving is often more expensive than other forms of transport - especially as fuel costs remain high. And think about the health benefits of walking or cycling, where it makes sense.

So whether you want to save energy, save money or get in shape, start thinking about ways to cut down on the amount your drive.
