Energy and climate change minister Ed Miliband spoke to the big six energy companies about making their tariff fairer yesterday.
In a meeting ahead of a December deadline to prove their prices are fair, Mr Miliband met with ScottishPower, E.On, British Gas, Npower and Scottish and Southern Energy.
A spokesperson for the Department for Energy and Climate Change spokesman said: "The government and the industry agreed on the need to bring down retail gas and electricity prices.
"The meeting also recognised the significant investment needs of the industry and the extreme volatility we have seen in energy prices in the last 12 months."
Over the course of the past year, energy companies have hiked their prices an average of about 30 per cent twice the price rises seen in the rest of Europe.
In a year where wholesale gas costs climbed before falling again British Gas' prices rose the most at 35 per cent, followed by ScottishPower on 34 per cent, E.On and Npower by 26 per cent and EDF by 22 per cent.
Such price raises have also seen a record amount of people fall into fuel poverty when they pay ten per cent or more of their income towards energy bills.
