Consumers have been advised to fix their energy bills before the market changes.
Price comparison website moneysupermarket.com warned that wholesale energy price rises were likely to be passed on to consumers soon.
Scott Byrom, utilities manager at the website, said: "With wholesale energy prices recently reaching a year-high and some providers removing their best fixed-rate deals, I fully expect other leading deals for new customers to be withdrawn from sale soon.
"Taking these factors into account, it is safe to say that the only way prices will go in the next few months is up, so if you are looking to avoid the impact of any increases you should fix now."
The warning comes as British Gas has reported £585 million of operating profit for the first half of the year.
Gas use was found to have increased by eight per cent compared to 2009 figures, due to the cold weather.
