Hydrogen supercar unveiled

12 November 2008

A hydrogen car that does not have to be periodically topped up with the fuel is to be unveiled later this year.

The styling of the Ron Motors Scorpion puts it in the aesthetic tradition of gas guzzlers, but it actually runs on water.

A 1.5 gallon water tank provides the fuel for the car, which can go from nought to 60mph in 3.5 second and continue accelerating over 200mph.

A battery on board electrolyses the water, separating out the hydrogen, making this vehicle different to other fuel cell cars which have to be recharged with the gas.

The hydrogen is then injected into the 3.5L V-6 motor, where it creates a 20 per cent to 40 per cent fuel efficiency advantage over petrol.

At the moment the car has to receive periodic refills of water, though Ronn Motors is working on a device to trap the condensation from the air conditioning system to replenish the tank.

The car will go on show at the Speciality Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas later this year.
