More could be done to encourage low-carbon vehicle use in the UK, it has been suggested.
Yesterday (July 28th) the Department for Transport revealed that support grants of up to £5,000 will be on offer to people who purchase an ultra-low carbon vehicle from January next year.
However, Ben Lane, managing director of What Green Car?, has suggested that more investment in the package would have provided further stimulation to the market.
"We broadly welcome the announcement," said Mr Lane.
"But I am disappointed that the coalition is only guaranteeing £43 million for consumer grants, when the original announcement was for £230 million."
The cut in funding followed the emergency Budget in which the coalition government revealed that extensive cuts across the departments were needed to reduce the country's public spending deficit.
Despite this, recent research from Datamonitor revealed that green vehicles are expected to represent 3.2 per cent of vehicles in Europe by 2015.
This compares positively to the 2.3 per cent currently on the roads.
